Judge orders BP to pay settlement within 30 days

(Photo: T.J. Pipitone) NEW ORLEANS — A federal judge ordered BP to start paying oil spill damage settlements to several hundred local governments and complete the payments in the next 30 days.

On July 2, U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier approved an $18.7 billion global settlement-in-principle between the oil giant and federal, state and local governments that claimed environmental and economic losses due to BP’s massive 2010 Gulf oil spill.
