PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) – Jackson County’s government and school entities are receiving their checks from the recently announced BP settlements.
Attorney Robert Wilkinson tells The Mississippi Press ( http://bit.ly/1h28G6c ) the checks, totaling more than $11.5 million, began coming in Friday and are being delivered to the various entities the week.
The local settlements are independent of the state’s $1.5 billion settlement with BP and were based on a formula which calculated property and sales tax losses in the wake of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.Jackson County received the largest settlement at $2.44 million.
