Want to Save the Middle Class? Join a Union

(Photo: Flickr) In spite of the recent wave of media outlets unionizing , it might be tempting to think that unions are a relic of the era when the U.S. dominated the steel and auto industries. While it’s true that union membership has been declining steadily for decades, with just 11.1 percent of workers across the public and private sectors unionized in 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics—down from 32 percent in the mid-1950s—new research suggests there’s reason to work to reverse that decline if society values economic mobility.
