Column: Florida should use BP settlement cash wisely


The recently announced settlement between BP and the state of Florida over the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010 should eliminate any doubt that our economy is unequivocally and irrevocably tied to a healthy and robust environment. How else can one explain why, in the most devastating ecological disaster in recorded history, Florida ends up with a record $2 billion economic damage settlement? Yes, the state furthest from the site of the disaster, with arguably the least amount of direct environmental damage, ends up with the largest economic loss.
