Northwest Florida counties moved closer Thursday to getting money the state received last year from the multibillion-dollar BP settlement tied to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. However, the House and Senate must still agree on those uses. The House unanimously voted for a pair of measures that would create a trust fund from which the BP settlement money would be available to the non-profit organization Triumph Gulf Coast and set a framework for how the counties most impacted by the disaster can use dollars.
“I think it’s pretty close,” said Rep. Jay Trumbull, a Panama City Republican sponsoring the […]

A senior policy maker with the Gulf Restoration Network said the $18.7 billion settlement between BP and the Gulf Coast states is a ‘good start’ but not enough to restore the coast after the 2010 oil spill. (July 2)

The Florida House voted unanimously Thursday to direct two-thirds of the $400 million the state is due from the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster to the worst-affected counties in the Panhandle.
HB 7077 requires 75 percent of all payments that Florida receives from the settlement agreement between the five gulf states and BP be transferred from the general fund to the Triumph Gulf Coast Trust Fund.
“This disaster took money out of the hands of families and hard-working small busineses in the Pahnhandle,” said Jay Trumbill , a Panama City Republican who was one of a number of […]

TALLAHASSEE — Efforts by Panhandle lawmakers to steer BP settlement money toward counties most impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill aren’t out of the legislative mire yet.
But lawmakers believe they can work out differences about how the money can be spent.
Both the House and Senate are now advancing measures that would allocate $300 million of the $400 million received last year to the Gulf Coast counties — Bay, Escambia, Franklin, Gulf, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla and Walton — hit most severely by the disaster. And the separate proposals would also send to those counties, through a non-profit trust […]

In August 2015, the City of Pensacola announced that it had reached agreement with BP on its oil spill claim. The one-time windfall had the possibility of creating legacy projects if the Hayward administration leveraged the funds with state and federal grants. Unfortunately, that didn’t happened.
Of the total $5.35 million settlement, $2 million went to replenish the city’s Natural Disaster Fund that was depleted after the 2014 flood; $989,669 was split between the city’s attorneys, Levin Papantonio, Beggs & Lane, Morgan and Morgan, Hinkle & Foran, Baron & Budd, and Weitz & Luxenberg (18 percent); and $1.27 million was […]

Boats battle a fire at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil giant BP will pay out more than $20 billion to settle claims against it for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.
The deal, announced by the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, is the largest settlement with a single entity in the department’s history.
It is a "fitting response to the worst environmental disaster in American history," Attorney General Loretta Lynch said. BP ( BP ) was receiving the "punishment it deserves," she added. The disaster was triggered by an explosion […]

This is not how we wanted the BP economic damages settlement saga to play out this year in the Mississippi Legislature.
The Coast was supposed to go to Jackson with a unified voice to fight off any attempts by delegations in the northern part of the state to tap into the more than $700 million the state will receive from BP to help the Coast recover from the Deepwater Horizon disaster that devastated the tourism and fishing industries.
Tuesday, while the Coast was celebrating Mardi Gras, lawmakers in the House killed a Senate bill that we wrongly assumed represented that unified […]

The county received the first payment of $17,550 on Monday, according to a spokeswoman.
The complaint alleged BP failed to properly inspect and maintain underground tanks used to store gasoline for retail sale at approximately 780 gas stations in California over a period of 10 years and violated other hazardous material and hazardous waste laws. Six of the stations were in Santa Barbara County, the spokeswoman said.
Settled in November 2016, the settlement was the result of collaboration among the California Attorney General’s Office and several district attorney’s offices across the state."This settlement holds BP accountable for putting our environment and […]
