BP to settle Deepwater Horizon claims for $18.7 billion

The size of an oil spill fine BP has said would imperil its U.S. operations in the Gulf of Mexico

HOUSTON — BP has agreed to pay a record $18.7 billion to settle federal and state claims against it for its role in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, sidestepping years of litigation with a promise to pour funds for nearly two decades into efforts to repair vast environmental damage in the Gulf region.

The pact, subject to court approval, would require the London oil major to pay the sum over the next 18 years in installments of $1.1 billion a year for most of the payment period. Weeks of negotiations between BP and the Justice Department ended in a […]

Memorandum of Law to Request Transparency and Accountability from BP Oil Well Blowout MDL Court

The total compensation paid to the 19 PSC attorneys and their law firms is guesstimated to be $3.035 billion. It is beyond cavil that a reasonable, objective observer would not conclude that this amount is out of all proportion to the value of the professional services rendered. This is a Motion by the plaintiffs to request the BP oil well blowout MDL Court to conduct itself in a fully transparent manner by placing on the public record the total amount and source of compensation, from all sources, paid to all members of the PSC and the total amount and […]

Governor wants to wait for a big-impact project to spend BP money

People on the Coast worried that upstate politicians would raid the BP settlement for economic damages might find some solace in the governor’s budget recommendation for next year’s legislative session.

In the document released Wednesday , the Bryant administration says it wants to sock the money away until someone comes up with a project that will have “an important economic impact” on the Gulf Coast and the state.

That’s very similar to a plan proposed by many leaders on the Coast. They’d like to see the money put into a reserve fund and spent on big-ticket projects that would boost the […]

The BP Oil Spill Settlement Is Wrong For America!

To the Editor:

The BP Oil Spill Multidistrict Litigation ("MDL 2179") officially started on August 10, 2010. The Transfer Order issued on that date by the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ("JPML") clearly states: "…centralization may also facilitate closer coordination with Kenneth Feinberg’s administration of the BP compensation fund." From the very beginning, the purpose of MDL 2179 was to replace democratic adversarial litigation with a fund approach to compensating victims of the BP oil spill. The vast majority of BP oil spill victims will never have their day in court. Judicial economy, rather than justice, was the […]
