August 19, 2017 ·  · Topic: Economic Mobility  · Relevance: bad

Caste networks play a crucial role in shaping economic mobility in India and can either support or hinder mobility, depending on the circumstances

The caste system is arguably the most distinctive feature of Indian society. The Indian population is divided into four hierarchical classes, or varnas , with a large sub-population of untouchables excluded entirely from the system. Within each of these classes, and among the untouchables, are thousands of castes, or jatis . The central rule in Hindu society is that individuals must marry within their own caste. Recent genetic evidence indicates that this rule has been followed for […]

By Demelza Baer

Last Saturday, the nation watched with horror and trepidation as white supremacists from across the country descended on Charlottesville to protest the plan by local officials to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee.

Many of the white supremacists arrived brandishing flags and symbols of the Confederacy and Nazi Germany, openly bearing weapons, and shouting racist, anti-Semitic, and xenophobic chants. That day, one of the marchers allegedly drove his car into a large crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heather D. Heyer, and injuring many others. That same day, two state troopers, Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Berke […]

A protester in 2011. Interest and concern about inequality has risen dramatically in recent years. Nearly 40,000 voters responded to the Stuff/Massey University election survey in May. A huge majority of them said inequality was too high and/or growing fast. No measure actually shows that – so why do so many of us feel that way? Henry Cooke reports.

It didn’t hit George all at once.

Growing up, he still got Christmas and birthday presents. His friends’ houses had always been far nicer than his. His mother would still take him out on trips around Wellington – just ones that […]

August 17, 2017 ·  · Topic: Economic Mobility  · Relevance: bad

The finer points of economic policy don’t get a lot of attention in the U.S. these days. But someday the smoke will clear, and leaders will once again be thinking about economics. So I thought I’d make a list of policies that I would enact if I were in office. The overall goals […]

Based on the latest data available, around 90 percent of marriages in India happen within the caste even during 21st century.Hence the question of how to break the caste system in India needs to be changed to […]
