Network for Southern Economic Mobility

June 21, 2017 ·  · Topic: Economic Mobility  · Relevance: bad

Overview:

The South boasts centers of fast growth, technological innovation, and educational excellence. However, set against this economic vitality are the nation’s lowest mobility and highest poverty rates. By one calculation, more than 50 percent of Americans living in high poverty neighborhoods live in the South. The picture for Southern youth and young adults is especially stark: it is harder in the South than anywhere else in the U.S. for young people in the poorest households to move up the economic ladder as adults. For too many, high poverty schools and low postsecondary attainment, tenuous links with the labor market, […]

The Case For An Investment State

June 21, 2017 ·  · Topic: Economic Mobility  · Relevance: bad

David Stoesz

David Stoesz The case for an Investment State rests with three propositions: The first is the diminishing credibility of the Welfare State. Flourishing mid-20 th century, it has struggled politically as a result of economic inequality, capital flight, bureaucratic inertia, damage to citizens, and the proliferation of subprime vendors. In response to the global financial crisis and the European debt crisis, government fiscal stimulus has been tepid at best. The second proposition is increasing, and occasionally virulent nationalism, fueled by working- and middle-class anxiety. Brexit, the Trump presidency, and insurgent populism threaten the solidarity premise of the Welfare State. […]

Atlanta is tackling one of America’s toughest inclusive growth challenges: the suburbanization of poverty. As its public transit system struggles to serve low-income workers living further from jobs, civic advocates are empowering the public to promote change using open data.

Economic Inequality Essay

June 20, 2017 ·  · Topic: Economic Mobility  · Relevance: bad

The study of the relationship between economic inequality and educational opportunity has been guided by at least three assumptions. First, education is a crucial factor in improving one’s social and economic status. Second, the quality of schooling one receives is related to the degree of social and economic success one achieves. And, third, the society has some level of responsibility for the type and quality of schooling available to its citizens. Following a description of the historical context of the relationship of education to economic inequality, this entry discusses two opposing perspectives from which that relationship has been interpreted.
